The Trail of Tears is one of the most commonly discussed atrocities to Native Americans. However, we rarely take time to examine it further than the basic, unemotional facts.
For this discussion post, I would like you to listen to this podcast: Trail of Tears
It recounts the events of the Trail and the modern-day implications.
Step 1: Listen to the podcast. Trail of Tears
Step 2: What part of the story struck you the most? Why?
Step 3: Why do you think we ignore the human aspect of the Trail of Tears? Why do we focus only on the facts?
Step 4: Comment on your classmate’s post. Do you agree or disagree with them?
RE: Question 2 – Trail of Tears
The part that stuck to me the most was the fact that a Cherokee save Andrew Jackson’s life yet he supported the removal of Native Americans from their homlands, I’m shocked by how Andrew Jackson could cause so much harm and suffering to people he fought along side with like it didn’t mean anything. I believe the reason we ignore the human aspect and only focus on the facts is because we can’t relate or experience what it was like back then, we understand what they wen’t through was brutal but we can’t imagine ourselves going though something like the Trail of Tears.
