Assignment One: Finding a Topic (Instructions)
Find a topic that interests you. This topic needs to be something you can measure. You are going to create a survey which is comprised of ten items. The items will be measured by a 4-point Likert scale (1 = strongly disagree; 2 = disagree; 3 = agree; 4 = strongly agree).
Be thinking along the following lines: (a) I need a population which can be sampled; (b) I need an issue which can be measured; (c) I need a perspective which can be understood.
There are many types of surveys which can be created to measure the perspectives of a group of people. The following is a list of the most common types of surveys: (a) opinions, (b) satisfaction, (c) expectations, and (d) self-efficacy.
I think it is best to keep things very simple at this stage. This is an introductory class on survey research. Since most of you have never created a survey before, I prefer to keep everything straightforward. Once you have learned the basics and have established a good foundation you can proceed to more advanced measures if you desire.
To facilitate your understanding I will give you an example of how to go about each assignment in this class. I am presently creating a survey called the The Dissertation Student Satisfaction Inventory. I will post an example of how I developed this survey instrument. This should give you some idea of how to go about doing these assignments and what I am expecting.
In assignment one create a narrative describing how you found your topic. This assignment should tell me about the topic, your interest in the topic, the importance of the topic, and how you will proceed to develop the survey instrument. This assignment should be 2 pages.
