Unions have a direct impact on both union and non-union employees’ members work areas. Unions have the ability to conduct collective bargaining for wage increases, pensions and health benefits and act as a mediator between the organization and the worker. The benefits, such as pensions and health insurance, were first provided in the unionized environment and then became more generalize but not universal in all workplaces. Union grievance procedures, which provide “due process” in the workplace, have been mimicked in many nonunion workplaces (Walters & Michel, 2003). One of the primary purposes of the union is to provide the worker with the ability to negotiate for good working conditions (UWUA, 2022). The EPI (Economic Policy Institute) conducted a study stating, the unions increase wages, decreased racial and gender disparities and improve wages across industries (APWU, 2021).
Workers normally see a 10 percent increase in their pay over their counterparts with the same level of education when the union negotiate under collective bargaining with the employer. If the state has a high density of unions, the non-union worker will see the same benefit of pay increase at the state and federal level which is a direct benefit of the from the union. High density union states will have a higher level of laws guaranteeing paid sick days, family medical leave, overtime and fair scheduling (APWU, 2021).
Unions have the ability to bring workers out of poverty and into middle class, but the anti-laws against unionizing continue to be a factor against closing the inequality gap. The non-union worker is entitled to the same benefits as the union workers, but the non-union worker will not have the negotiating support through collective bargaining.
