I hope to undertake a research project investigating the cultural customs of relationships and how these impact the clinical presentation of OCD; specifically, in relationship-centred OCD (ROCD) within a romantic context. ROCD is characterised by an obsessive preoccupation with one’s feelings towards their partner, and the overall quality and ‘rightness’ of the relationship. Compulsions for this sub-type can be extensive as many rituals remain covert; these may include rumination on whether their partner is ‘the one’, reassurance seeking from friends, mental checking if they feel ‘in love’, and scanning their body to ensure sexual arousal.
Some research exists investigating the role of culture in OCD severity and presentation. Themes of obsessions have been found to differ across nations, such as religious themes prevailing in Middle Eastern countries, contamination themes in India, and aggression or harm themes in Brazil. Whether cultural factors influence the experience of and responses to ROCD related intrusions remains unknown; considering the differences in relationship expectations and dynamics cross-culturally, this may alter ROCD’s symptom dimensions. Understanding this may have implications in delivering a culturally competent practice, which could foster treatment seeking behaviours and retention.
