PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENT
This assignment is designed to help you critically think about the literature we have read in Units 2 and 3. This project is designed to help you demonstrate in writing your mastery of the major objectives of Units 2 and 3 and the Content Knowledge associated with the Course Objectives.
SKILLS TO ACQUIRE
This assignment will help you master several important skills necessary to performing writing tasks in college and engaging with ideas and values that are foundational to a well-rounded university education.
• Identify literary genres, major writers, and important schools of thought in American literature from the pre-colonial era to the end of the 18th century.
• Summarize, interpret, and analyze literary texts in relation to a specific argumentative thesis.
• Utilize and extend the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills developed in ENGL 1101 and ENGL 1102.
• Identify the cultural factors that shaped American literature and define the common concerns and values of humanity as expressed through literature.
Choose a primary text that interests you from Unit 2 or 3; choose a text by a different author from the one you chose for your video project. (Remember that a primary text is a text that is an original artifact of its time, such as a letter, memoir, diary entry, poem, novel, speech, etc.)
For this project, you will creatively translate that primary text into a 21st century medium. For example, one of Columbus’ letters could become a tourism website or a travel brochure, one of Bradstreet’s poems could become a music video, Mary Rowlandson’s memoir might become a webcomic, or The Coquette could become a Netflix series.
Create a project with an audio, video, and/or visual element that demonstrates your thorough understanding of the primary text in question with your own original spin on it. This could be a sample of your proposed media product (a screen shot, cover art, clip, etc.) or an ad for it (movie poster, YouTube ad, etc.).
(Remember that the focus should be on the primary text as opposed to the author themselves–so, for example, while redesigning the Declaration of Independence as a video game could work, creating a Tinder profile for Thomas Jefferson would not.)
You will submit your media product along with a document in which you explain the choices that you made in your project. This paper will be a minimum of 450 words. In this paper, please discuss:
Why you make the choices you did here? (Why does your media project suit the original text? Who is its audience? What is its potential appeal?)
How does this change the source material? What is kept intact?
In what ways is the source text relevant–and not relevant–to us today?
How/why does your project critique and/or interpret the original primary text?
You will want to support your project with specific relevant details and/or quoted material from your chosen primary text.
Your attached commentary should be in the form of a minimum 450-word paper that follows MLA format conventions.
Ensure that your submission adheres to the standards of academic honesty and reflects your own original words, work, and ideas. Please ask if you have any questions about citation or academic honesty.
You do not need to do external secondary research for this assignment, nor do you need to bring any outside material into your response. This project is designed for you to demonstrate critical thinking and to explore the primary texts on your own.
(While I am aware that webpages exist with sample essays, “analyses,” and summaries, many of these are unreliable and/or misleading, and their influence is readily traced. If you do not feel confident about your ideas or ability to interpret the literature at hand, please reach out to me or our embedded librarians and let us help you rather than relying on using the ideas of others without attribution.)
